OUR HISTORY

Formerly known as The Sir Walter Raleigh Hotel, downtown Raleigh's oldest surviving edifice constructed between 1923 and 1924, the Virginia Dare Ballroom is Raleigh's hidden gem.

The hotel was constructed on a corner of Fayetteville Street; Raleigh’s broad main street. At the time, The Sir Walter was the most massive building in the south portion of the downtown business district. By 1925, the Sir Walter was home to over 80 percent of the state legislatures, in addition to lobbyists, aides, jurors, newspapermen, businessmen and other influential individuals over the next three decades.

The Sir Walter Raleigh Hotel is now a designated Raleigh Historic Landmark.
